One of the late Jonathan Gold's premier recommendations--impeccably prepared and presented Lebanese specialties, hummus, baba ganoush, tabouleh, lamb shanks, chicken and beef on the brazier. Can't go wrong here.

The Farmer's Market has been an L.A., landmark forever! Art Linklater used to broadcast from there when I was a kid. Now it sits cheek by jowl with the The Grove, the city's toniest al fresco shopping center. But the Farmer's Market holds its own with butcher shops, New Orleans style gumbo places, bars, a great Brazilian gaúcho bbq place for carnivores, ice cream parlors, candy shops, bakeries, a wonderful European wine and gourmet delicacy shop, a crêpe place run by Philippine crêpe masters, fruit and vegetable stands with Southern California's freshest produce and lots and lots of places you can sit and talk and eat and be entertained by the passers by or dialogue with your table-mates.

Up until about five years ago, Grand Central Market was a place where you could get a wonderful bowl of sopa de pescado or a fantastic burrito, some down home Chinese food and a bargain basement ice cream cone on your way out. Now it is a world-class food emporium with high-end alternatives and still retains its historic feel. I no longer frequent it as often because I no longer teach at Evans Adult School which is very near but my wife and co-host does and she raves about it. The parking lot is right upstairs and it's definitely an iconic spot for visitors, hungry or just looking...

It's where Galileo, Copernicus, James Dean, Wolfgang Puck and the Cosmos come together. Plus the best 1930s art nouveau restoration in Hollywood and the only place in town where you can see stars above you and beside you (if you're lucky). Free peeks through the telescope after dark, 53 miles of hiking trails in Griffith Park.

Entertainment & Activities
The Greek Theatre, two golf courses, pony rides, carousel, Bee Rock, picnic grounds, the Autry Museum, the L.A. Zoos, old and new, Henry's trail, Glendale Peak, drum circles every weekend. A place to get lost and find yourself in the midst of the surrounding urban madness. To picnic, to make love, to forget about your trifling concerns and have a wonderful time!

This is where little city kids first encounter equestrians. If they take to it, like my daughter did, they end up at the Equestrian Center in Burbank riding and feeding and stabling horses. There are lots of trail riding possibilities in G.P. The stables are located at the western edge of the park. Any excuse to enter these sacred grounds is a good one. Along with Central Park (where I was born), Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis, and the parks of San Francisco and San Diego, I like silver magnate Griffith P. Griffiths gift to the fledgling City of L.A. the best!

Parks & Nature
It's worth it to see the vastness of the Pacific, feel the smooth white sand beneath your feet and get a little ozone. For God's sake don't drive there on weekends! Take the Red Line to the Culver City metro and ride in style with the hoi polloi or hail a Lyft or Uber. L.A. is more and more a city to seek alternatives to driving yourself because of increasing traffic density and the devilish competition for parking after 5 PM. Guests to Catalina House are always advised to cut down on the number of cars they rent or avoid them completely because of the crescent density of KTown living spaces and the fact that the cars seem to outnumber the people! Why spend any of your time here hassling?

You go for a ride with the kids, maybe two or three rides and then you visit the Old L.A. Zoo, spooky, haunted, atmospheric within walking distance of the Merry-Go-Round and then you hike up the trail to Bee Rock and, if you have good shoes and leg strength, you climb up to the caves with which it is pocked and, in the evening, watch the bats and swallows.

Arts & Culture
It's the biggest and most convenient museum in the neighborhood. It has free jazz concerts on Friday evenings and free Latin-American concerts on Saturday afternoons all summer. It has a film series (which used to be better than it is now) and a concert series in Bing Hall, a couple of decent places to eat and snack and, if the late Walter Hopps is to be believed (via his posthumous book The Dream Colony) Los Angeles is second only to NYC as a producer of great post-modern art, interesting artists, curators and critics.

Drinks & Nightlife
This is the umbilicus of the Korean club and restaurant scene. The young, hip, handsome and beautiful congregate here and around here. The choices of restaurants, stylish shops and amazing supermarkets ripples out from here is all directions, mainly west and south. Right now (summer 2018) it has all the energy of its downtown cousins, Chinatown and Little Tokyo and it's slightly easier to get in and out of because Wilshire, Vermont, Normandie and Western Avenues are usually easy to navigate after sundown. The Korean club scene has its own rules and rituals but they are definitely not xenophobic and K-Pop is hot at the moment!

This is the place for discophiles, jazz freaks, country and western freaks, blues freaks, rock and roll freaks, classical freaks, punk and rap freaks and freaks in general! If you live by your ears or earbuds and who doesn't, this is Xanadu and Valhalla combined. It's huge, it's eclectic beyond belief and there's something, anything, everything you're looking for in music and videos and recorded entertainment somewhere in there, often in "good as new" condition. Now all you have to do is find it!

Well, you need a membership card but almost anybody who cares for food and has more than a couple of mouths to feed has one! For the uninitiated, they don't supply grocery bags (especially not plastic ones!) so you may have to rely on boxes of which they have plenty. The Los Feliz Blvd Costco is in an area called Atwater Village which is a westerly suburb of Glendale. Along with Super King Market and Trader Joe's, it is one of my consumer's trinity of happy (and not too expensive) purveyors. I won't tell you what I get there on a regular basis because then there'll be a run on the items and they won't be there next time I go in hunt of them. Costco is the Taj Mahal of all purpose shopping
