Neighborhoods

Stroll through the 8 block corridor of the Freret Street district for cocktails (Cure and others), a music club, some shops, and, above all, but it is mostly known for its many casual eateries and places to get a quick bite to eat and/or drink. There is also a pint-sized, fully stocked Rouses grocery in case you need anything while you are here.

Walk the 8 blocks from our house (or if you are feeling lazy, park you car at the corner of Joseph and St. Charles) to reach St. Charles Aven and a streetcar stop that can take you in either direction (to the right - Carrollton Ave., to the left - downtown and the French Quarter). Everybody does it at least once - it's a leisurely and scenic ride with lots of oak trees and historic homes. $1.25 ticket one way that you can purchase on the streetcar.

Sightseeing

I don't know why I am just thinking of places to go away from all of the eating, drinking, dancing, fun places to go in New Orleans. It is not hard to find those places, but most of our guests don't bring their pirogues with them so I just want to share a few spots where one can experience the unique natural beauty of our city in places that are easy to access.
Most people don't remember how it came to be known to locals as "The Fly". People just like saying it, but it's really because there used to be a butterfly shaped pavilion overlooking the Mississippi. Between the levee and the river, so you are right there! Open from 5 a to 9 p. If you are jogging around the back end of the park (behind Magazine St. and the zoo), you will find it. You can also drive there by taking the little road to the right of the zoo parking lot. There is plenty of space to park and it's a good spot to watch the boats/barges go by, walk, take a nap or picnic on a blanket (or take advantage of the "go cup" rule). AMAZING SUNSET! Right now there is a bit of construction going on because damage from the very high waters we had this summer. The river was so high it looked like it was going to overtop.

City Park is great - it is a huge park, not exactly in our neighborhood but wonderful. We used to live a few blocks away and what a wonderful backyard it was - I miss it! The park houses the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), a fabulous sculpture garden, botanical garden, a carousel, the recently revamped Storyland (!), a more peaceful Cafe du Monde than the one in the Quarter, and more. Big old City Park. Celebration in the Oaks will begin around Thanksgiving - you can walk around or drive through the enchantingly lit ancient oak trees for a real treat.

Take a ride along Lakeshore Drive (car or bicycle), bring a fishing pole or just sit on the seawall and relax. Eat seafood near the marina, in Bucktown, or overlooking the water. Visit the Mardi Gras Fountain. Drive down to "the Point", watch the sailboats and hobnob with the casual fishermen, drink a beer (yes you can!), watch the sunset.
