According to legend, once upon a time a very strong man lived on the Daugava riverside and he earned his living by carrying people across the river on his back. One night he was approached by a little boy who asked to carry him over the river. Although the weather was stormy, the man picked up the child and began carrying him across the river. With each step, the man found that the child was becaming heavier until by midstream only with the greatest of effort could he made it to shore. The boy turned out to be Christ's son so the man was named Kristaps (Latvian form of Christopher). Now you will find his statue on the right bank of the Daugava.

The church was built near the River Daugava in 1211 by Livonian Bishop Albert of Riga, who came from Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. It is considered the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. It has undergone many modifications in the course of its history. David Caspari was rector of the cathedral school in the late 17th century. His son Georg Caspari also served at the cathedral. Religious services were prohibited during the Soviet occupation from 1939 to 1989, and the cathedral was used as a concert hall. In 2011 the copper roofing above the nave was replaced. In 2015 the tower exterior was also re-plated and its wooden support structure renewed.

he collection of red-roofed buildings along Torņa Street on one side of Old Town Riga is known as Jacob’s Barracks and is home to a number of bars and restaurants, beauty salons, and travel agencies. The barracks were built in the 18th century at the base of the city fortifications and since then they were restored several times. From the very beginning until the 1990s the premises were used by various armies until the last restoration in 1997. Now the eye-catching buildings are significant features of Old Town Riga; they can be regarded as a border between the city's history and contemporary times. Today the premises host various intimate restaurants, bars and cafes, beauty salons, travel agencies, and souvenir shops. Please pay attention that Jacob's Barracks face the historic Powder Tower and Swedish Gate on the other side of Torņa Street.

St.John's Church is the oldest house of worship in Riga. Originally the Dominican monastery's chapel was located here in the 13th century. After several reconstructions, around 1500 the edifice acquired its present appearance - high Gothic pediment, span roof and a small tower. In 1523 Riga City Council confiscated St. John's Church. A Latvian congregation acquired the church in 1582, though it turned out to be too small for their needs. In 1587 - 1588 the church was enlarged with a wing for the altar. During the 18th century St. John's Church sustained damage several times and was reconstructed. The present tower was built in 1849 according to a project by architect J.D.Felsko. St.John's Church has a legend - in the 15th century two monks wished to become saints and were immured in the wall. While they were still alive, Riga residents fed them through a special hole. But they were not consecrated. There is still a cross-shaped hole in a wall where both bodies lie.

Southward from the center of the Old Town of Riga, along the right bank of the Daugava, is a quarter gilded with a historical aura – Spikeri Quarter and its adjacent promenade, which are part of the territory of UNESCO Cultural Heritage – the historical center of the city of Riga. Since the 14th century, this area had a wharf for loading and unloading cargo ships. The location had several warehouses (Hanf – Ambaren or “hemp warehouse” in German). The warehouse quarter was created in the second half of the 19th century, when the territory was covered with uniform warehouses. Designed in the 19thcentury by the best architects of the Baltic States, the simple but striking red brick buildings there are 150 years old.

Kalnciema Quarter is a bright and lively spot in Riga, on the left bank of the Daugava River, in the green and colourful area of Pārdaugava. It regularly hosts events for families and children, art exhibitions, plays, open-air concerts, and educational events. Kalnciema Quarter is particularly famous for its weekly market – ever since 2008, on Saturdays, local farmers and artisans have been bringing their versatile produce to Kalnciema Quarter. Market is on Saturdays year round (and also on Sundays in December). The cluster of renovated wooden buildings contains a Wooden Architecture center , Wine shop and cafe, offering wine from the small vineyards of Marche, Italy, a restaurant, an art gallery and a design salon. The office space in the Quarter is inhabited by architects, media specialists and other creative professionals. The buildings of Kalnciema Quarter, located at the crossing of Kalnciema and Melnsila Streets are a part of Riga’s wooden architecture heritage dating back to the 19th century and representing the epoch of the late Classicism in Europe. The resurrection of the Quarter’s wooden buildings began in 2001. Currently, seven renovated buildings enclosing the yard with a small orchard are open to the public. All the buildings have been renovated, using traditional materials and technologies, with modern conveniences built in and adjustments to answer the needs of the contemporary lifestyle. Kalnciema Quarter has expanded the concept and prospects of the wooden architecture heritage by infusing the buildings with contemporaneity and making them publicly accessible. The Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia blooms and blossoms throughout the year! The Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia can be found across the river, in Pardaugava, just a 10-minute ride from the central part of Riga. The garden was founded in 1922. Over 15ha visitors can explore hothouses and outdoor collections with some 6,000 different plants. It is one of the most well-loved recreational spaces in Riga - you can slowly walk the garden’s compact yet informationally saturated territory, get to know plants from all over the world, visit the Plants House, the Azalea House as well as the Tropical House, or just enjoy lush nature in the middle of the city. Whether you are a gardening enthusiast, a botanical expert, or just want to spend time in a beautiful and pleasant environment, you will always find something interesting here. The garden’s collection is wide and carefully chosen - it includes protected plants, or those used for medical treatment, as well as a collection of the poisonous plants of Latvia. Most of the trees and bushes in the arboretum are uncommon for Latvian flora; for example, the witch hazel, cedar, walnut tree, ginkgo tree, mulberries, roses, cork tree and an edible chestnut tree. The garden has a rich collection of perennial plants, dahlias and other decorative plants. A special collection provides an insight into the world of swamp plants as well as different kinds of moss and lichen. The Plant House has various kinds of tropical and subtropical plants as well as different dessert plants, including cactus.

An island on the Daugava river, which only a few years ago was full of abandoned sheds, has become a popular place for bathing and recreation after the launch of renovation works. The Lucavsala park attracts children, those who prefer active recreation and other residents who want to enjoy nature while remaining close to the city centre. Swimming The park has a swimming area equipped with changing cabins. The beach has been designed so that both children and adults can swim safely. It is located right across from Zaķusala island, granting a view that will make you forget you are in the centre of the city. There is a shoal in the middle of the river which can be safely reached from the bank and volleyball pitches next to the bathing area. Playground The playground has everything children need to have fun - they can jump, slide, climb, or play in a sandbox. They can also make new friends among the many children who visit! Wakepark The wakepark is located on the right side of the island, in front of the TV centre. The park has a 230-metre long cable system for wakeboarding. However, by the start of the twentieth century Old St Gertrude's recorded more than 30,000 church members, meeting as three distinct congregations. A German congregation and a Latvian congregation alternated their services between Sunday morning and Sunday afternoons, and a second Latvian congregation worshipped on Sunday evenings. The Great Ķemeri Bog is a top spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. When the days are still warm but the temperatures drop at night mist starts to rise, turning the already epic landscape into a dramatic stage. Arriving before sunrise is essential because it takes some time to reach the watch tower and the most beautiful light is right before and shortly after the sun peaks above the horizon. After that the mist disappears quite quickly.

Nature is most appealing at the moments when it reveals its true colours - at sunrise, at sunset, during a storm, morning dew and the northern lights. I went to the White Dune at the end of October when the chilly mornings were showing the first signs of winter. The White Dune is a distinctive place. You can watch how Pēterupe River makes its way to the sea and hike along the well-equipped trails in the dunes. Each viewing platform offers slightly different scenery.

Lake Kaņieris is unique mainly because of the trail running right through it. You actually walk on a floating platform surrounded by long reeds, and see and hear an array of birds. All this combined with early morning or evening sun offers quite a surreal experience.

Pine forests have a special kind of beauty to them. Sunlight bounces off the tree trunks, the scenery is so vast, and the surroundings are seemingly transparent. Upon taking a photo, the branches are not in the way because they only grow at the tip of the trees. The orange-reddish tree trunk vividly contrasts with the green moss and green pine tree crown.

Lāčupīte Arboretum and its cottages were discovered 4 or 5 years ago. I love this place because of the fresh air and beautiful nature. Most of all, I like to be there during the flowering of the rhododendrons when it feels like time has stopped and, for some reason, the photos always come out particularly well. The unusual cottages are also photogenic so the arboretum has become a favorite for Instagram photographers.

Riga Central Market is situated in the heart of Riga, a few hundred meters from Old Town on the banks of the River Daugava, next to Riga International Bus Terminal and Central Railway Station. It is not only one of the largest marketplaces in Eastern Europe in area, but also one of the most visited, as 80,000-100,000 people shop there per day on the average. Architecturally-imposing food pavilions, built in the 1920s, are Riga Central Market’s calling card. Originally used as military airship hangars, they were later transformed into market venues. Riga Central Market is unique not only with its pavilions but also with its old warehouses or the so-called spikeri (from German Spéicher), which have now been turned into a hip arts&entertainment quarter. In 1998, the vast territory of Riga Central Market was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
