Food scene

This tiny restaurant is fast becoming popular with the locals of San Antonio. Chef Kim delights with Korean influenced plates full of unique and wonderful flavors. Part of the menu rotates, so there is always adventure waiting for you at your next visit. A favorite is the chicken and biscuit which is unlike any we've ever had before.

First the sangria flights. I went with this the first time I visited because I wasn't sure which one I should choose- they all looked so good. The flight has become my mainstay however because honestly I can't pick one favorite. They are all yummy. The tacos are fresh and hold together nicely. Get the oyster taco when it's one the menu. Otherwise the pork belly, Al Pastor and Fajita Chicken are awesome. The fideo. I had the fideo for the first time last week and, oh my!! It is simply the best! The service is great and there is patio dining. Tip- call for a reservation because this place is small, popular and fills fast.

The servers are there for you even before you know you need them. The food is fresh, creative and the servings are pretty hefty. I love the uniqueness of the decor. The outdoor patio is pleasant on a warm night and the outdoor bar serves drinks from an Airstream camper/trailer. Another Airstream can be reserved for a small group of diners.

Specializing in the cuisine of Hyderabad, this little hole in the wall is always busy filling to-go orders and serving dine-in customers. The food is fresh, fragrant and tasty. We have tried a number of dishes and they were all good. We love the Naan- so far the best we've found in San Antonio. My favorite is the Butter Chicken and my boyfriend usually gets the Chicken Tikka Masala. The best Indian flavors in San Antonio.

The owners are so friendly, it feels like returning home every time we visit. Check out their menu online as it changes every week or so, although the three desserts seem to remain constant. All are wonderful. The food is fresh, creative and unique. The venue is a charming historic house and inside can get a little cozy. Every time we go we see people who go regularly, like once-a-week regular. It's that good. Make reservations or you might not get a seat when you arrive. Groups of more than four can dine outside.

"Cozy ambience with eclectic furniture, porcelain sink 'ice buckets', delicious signature cocktails, a view of the Tower all set in a beautiful little house. Pastiche offers a very pleasurable experience."

"I love the intimacy, quietness and ambiance of The Modernist. This is one of the hidden gems of San Antonio. The mixologists are creative- you can ask for a favorite drink but I like to discover new things so I give them free rein with creating something for me based on a couple of suggestions. I haven't been disappointed yet. You won't know you are at The Modernist when you first walk up but trust me, it's real. Go around to the left towards the back on a busy night. The outdoor seating area is nice but if you get there early you definitely need to get indoor seating. The smooth ambiance is indoors."

Sightseeing

This is a great place for hiking and a little cave exploration. First you have to walk up the fairly steep incline of the Enchanted Rock to get to the caves. Bring a headlamp or you won't get beyond 10 feet in the cave. It is pitch black inside and you will need your hands free to maneuver over, under, around rock formations. There are some pretty tight spots so don't enter if you have even a hint of claustrophobia. There is no turning back once you enter- you just go straight through to the other side. There are a variety of trails and different hills to climb. You can reserve overnight camping. Stop by Fredericksburg on your way back to San Antonio and sample the authentic German fare at a local restaurant. Many shops line the main street of Fredericksburg. All of these places are popular with the locals and out-of-towners. We usually make a day of the entire trip. Arrive early to Enchanted Rock as the parking lot fills quickly on the weekends and the Rock gets hot as the day goes on.

Ride-share to downtown

Parking can get pretty expensive and be almost non-existent downtown. We usually find a place to park for free as close to downtown as possible, then Uber the rest of the way. You will save money and time.

Fun Family Experience

Check out the Doseum where kids of all ages touch, see, do and interact with the displays. You really could spend the entire day there. Some of the displays change over the season and certain days offer discounts. Check out the website for details.

Yelp is a great tool.

Use Yelp to assist you with finding good places to dine. We generally look for anything with 4 or more stars and numerous reviews before we try it for the first time and have had great success so far. It helps to know approximately how much you might be spending before you order too.

GO RIO River Shuttles

These river shuttles travel along the San Antonio Riverwalk and make stops along the way. This is a great way to explore much of the downtown river and the venues along the way. This isn't the same as the guided tour but it will take you to some parts of the river where the tour doesn't go.
