during the 19th century, the Erie canal was a major corridor for transporting goods from Buffalo to NYC, across the State of New York. the name Lockport comes from "locks" on the canal that transport boats up and down, given changes in topography. locks are literally bike elevators and they are super cool! there are companies that offer boat tours or you can just take a short trip, about 40 minutes from the Inn. there is. fabulous ice cream spot and coffee bar right next to the locks, lake effect ice cream and Steamworks coffee. both are in my guidebook.

if you walk to the end of Chilton, where the Innis located, you will come to whirlpool. cross the new park and bike trails and you will find yourself right next to the niagara gorge. there are hiking trails all along the gorge accessible from the bike path in both directions. turn right and you will head towards whirlpool state park and left and you will ultimately get to the falls. both destinations are approximately a 20 minute walk. a little longer if you take a gorge trail.

if you love architecture and beautiful neighborhoods with big old houses, check out buffalo. during the 20th century buffalo was the playground for the greatest architects of the time. it doesn't disappoint. the Darwin Martinhouse, the central terminal, city hall, the Elmwood village, and canalside are all worth a look.

If you are in town for more than a day or two, you may want to plan a day trip to Toronto. Toronto is a fabulous international city and Kensington Market is one of our favorite neighborhoods. Once across the bridge, Toronto is about 90 minutes driving time.
