The lakes are dotted with watershields and surrounded by birch and maple trees. They are ideal for a variety of activities such as canoeing, boating and fishing in summer or snow mobiling, snow shoe walking and ice fishing in winter.

Onuma Quasi-National Park

Mt. Komagatake is a 1,131 m high dormant volcano and towers over Onuma. It's great to look at from Onuma, but you can actually take a hike up in the summer season. The trail that leads up to the top can be reached by car and the actual hike takes only between 1 - 2 hours and is suitable for beginners. The view from the top is stunning.

Poco Bakery has nice bakery items including baguette. It's closed on Mondays and opens at 9am on other days. The chef also makes Pizza occasionally.

Very local Izakaya (pub) run by an elderly couple. The food menu is small, but it's actually quite good and the place has a very authentic, local charme. The owners don't speak English, but you will get by with showing what you like.

Wald is a very cozy, cottage-style restaurant with few seats. The couple who runs it is very passionate and it has been open for more than 30 years, although the place doesn't show. They have great lamb, but also salad, pasta and pizza. Simple, but nice.

This shop sells Onuma Dango and it is very famous. Dango is a Japanese sweet, basically chewy and soft rice balls covered in sweet paste. The shop sells 3 types of dango flavors: Shoyu (soy sauce), red bean and black sesame paste. One box of dango consists of 2 flavors (shoyu-red bean or shoyu-black sesame). The shop is just 50 metres from the house. You should try it!

Yamakawa Dairy has the best soft cream in this part of Hokkaido. Very yummy and worth trying. It's about 2km from the house and can be reached on foot which may be a good idea to burn the calories ;-)

Ooba Sei Pan. Hands down the best bakery in the area. Great Campagne bread and the banana and apple pie (depending on the season) are out of this world. You'll need a car.

Onuma Craft Beer brewery makes four types of beers and they are being sold in the region. The beer is German style (Alt beer & Koelsch beer for those who are familiar with it). The brewery pub is not very cozy, but ok to visit and try the beer. They also sell the beer for take-out, but be mindful that it's not cheap. A small bottle is >JPY 600 and they close at 4pm in winter and at 5pm in summer.

Nanae Snow Park is the largest ski resort in the area. The cable car to the peak is one of the longest in Japan. The snow is powdery and the slopes are well maintained. There is a ski school and ski & snowboard rental.
There is a free shuttle bus to the snow park from Onumakoen station, just steps away from the apartment.

Our neighbour's bicycle rental shop. The owner is very nice and rents out all types of bikes, including e-bikes. The bikes are great for a ride around lake Onuma which is approx. 14 km.

You can rent rowing boats and pedal boats here at reasonable fees. The also offer a tour of the lake in small motorboats.
In winter ice fishing is available here and snow mobiles can be rented nearby when the lake is frozen.
