Parks, Beaches and Hills.

Dumfries has lots of lovely outdoor attractions.
There are lots of things to do here including Putting, Trampolines and nice walks along the River Nith towards Glencaple. If you walk far enough you can reward yourself with a drink or food at the Swan.

Sandyhills is a large sandy beach located along the southern coastline of Dumfries and Galloway. The beach slopes gently so the water is shallow and it is a popular beach for paddling and exploring rock pools. However, there are water quality issues at Sandyhills so it is recommended to check latest updates on the water pollution if you are intending to enter the water. At low tide, vast stretches of sand are exposed which make it an excellent beach for walkers. Behind the beach there are car pay for parking spaces, a small shop and a café and public toilets. More facilities can be found in the adjacent holiday park and the village of Colvend, a few miles drive from the beach. This area of coast is renowned for its natural beauty and is a paradise for walkers, especially as dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. To the west, visitors can enjoy the wonderful cliff- top coastal scenery on the way to Rockliffe. To the east, Southerness lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland is a few miles away along Southerness beach.

Southerness is a wide, sandy beach, with some rocky areas. It covers the areas either side of Southerness Point, within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is a perfect beach for walking, with dogs allowed all year round and the sands rolling on for many miles. At low tide mud flats are exposed as well as some interesting rockpools. Parking can be found at Southerness Point as well as a camp site, a hotel, public toilets, and a fish and chips restaurant. There is also a golf club nearby. Visitors can directly access the beach. The main landmark in the area is Southerness Lighthouse. It was completed in 1749 making it the second oldest lighthouse in Scotland, although it was decommissioned in 1936. During the summer months it may be open to visitors.

Rockliffe is a sandy beach located at the southern end of the Dumfries and Galloway coastline. It is part of a National Scenic Area and there are plenty of National Trust areas around the beach. In fact this is known for being one of the most beautiful areas of coastline anywhere in Scotland. As such it is a great favourite with walkers, many of whom flock to Rockliffe and its surrounds every year, particularly as dogs are allowed on the beach year round. There are many marked routes for visitors to choose from. There is excellent cliff- top coastal scenery on the route between Rockliffe and Sandyhills. The beach itself is quite small and picturesque, surrounded by rocks and backing on to the village of Rockliffe. There are parking spaces with direct access to the beach and in the town there are toilets and a café. Rough Island is a popular nature sanctuary a few hundred meters from the beach. It can be reached by a tidal causeway, but any visitors planning a trip to the island must check beforehand when the tide is set to come in and allow plenty of time for their return or risk being caught out by the tide. During the months of May and June, the island is off-limits due to nesting birds.

Take a walk in paradise at five star Logan Botanic Garden, Scotland's most exotic Garden, and discover plant treasures rarely seen in the United Kingdom. Located on the south-western tip of Scotland, Logan enjoys an almost subtropical climate. The Garden's avenues and borders feature a spectacular and colourful array of half-hardy perennials. The Garden is warmed by the Gulf Stream which enables plants from Australia, New Zealand, South and Central America and Southern Africa to thrive.

Criffel may be only 569 metres high, but its modest altitude belies its prominence, rising as the highest hill for miles around and dominating the Solway coastline. The ascent is short but steep and rewarded with stunning views of the Solway, its estuaries and across to the English Lake District.

Such an idyllic setting. Park in the car park then walking to the beaches and over the rocks. Even on a windy day there is somewhere sheltered to sit. The shore walk is also beautiful.
