Kiwi cuisine, substantial and well priced. It is also the closest to my address.
Its in an interesting old stone building. We went in May 2018 and shared one $20 entree and got a variety of meats and cheeses salmon olives onion gerkins plus a warm loaf with flavoured butter. My venison main (a medium /rare lean steak) with vegetables was up there with the best I have tasted at pricier restaurants . Peter was a little over whelmed by a delicious sheet of pork ribs covering a huge platter. Wine is $8 a glass. It specializes in tap beer and 6 are on offer.

Drive to Glenorchy at the head of the lake. There are great views all the way there. It is also tnear the start of several great walks.
No car - then do the jetboat safari which includes transport to Glenorchy. Its a jetboat ride into the upper reaches of the Dart River. Some guests add the Funyaks trip and kayak back down the river.

1 Book an overnight cruise before or after your Queenstown visit.
2 Fly/cruise/fly (flights 45 mins each way)
3 Fly a circuit there without landing
4 Coach/cruise/fly (weather dependant)
5 Coach/cruise/coach (coach with glass roof is nice)
6 Drive/cruise/drive (5+2+5=12 hours) congested road with buses.
6 Drive/cruise/drive Doubtful Sound alternative (3+3+3=9 hours) .
My most successful drivers to Milford left before 6am (before the buses) booked an 11am boat trip and managed to return by 6pm. Some get back so late they sleep all the following day or don't get back the same day.
