Depending on which angle you view it from, Cnicht either looks like a truly difficult ascent, or a fairly non-descript hummock. Accessible from the back of the barn, the ‘Welsh Matterhorn’, to use its nickname, is a comparatively easier task than Snowdon, at under half the distance, yet it still…

Accessed from Croesor, this is our favourite mountain, a more strenuous walk.

Another high peak close by. Not as arduous to climb as Snowdon, but again wear the right clothes and footwear and you will be rewarded with a spectacular day out

A stunning mountain walk with 360 views of Snowdonia and the sea. Only a 15 minute drive away

I always recommend Cnicht (the Sentinel) to those who want to enjoy a mountain walk but don't enjoy the over-crowded slopes of Snowden. Cnicht looks very like Snowdon but is accessed from Croesor where there is a car park. Enjoy a Welsh tea at the community café to reward yourself for clambering up…

“Hedd Wyn - farmer, soldier, poet. On sun filled summer days, there is no wonder that Hedd Wyn was a reluctant soldier, he was happy at home, he enjoyed the harvest, and he thrived with a pen. A self taught poet that mastered the hardest lines of Welsh poetry, (the cynghanedd) from the tender age of twelve, there is no wonder that he ultimately won the biggest prize in Welsh literature, the National Eisteddfod Chair. However unknown to the thousands in attendance at the Birkenhead National Eisteddfod, six weeks before the Archdruid announced his pseudo name 'Fleur-di-lis' on a stage on the outskirts of Liverpool. Hedd Wyn had been shot in the stomach and passed away under the fireworks of bullets in a field far away from his own.”

“The nearest Snowdon path from Tanycastell, some 20 minutes drive. A shorter route but more strenuous. Limited car parking facilities available so arrive early or opt for the park and ride in Nant Peris, the other side of Pen y Path. Stop at Pen y Gwryd on the way - the hotel served as a place of stay for |Tensing and Hillary before their sumit of Everst. Full of related and mountain memorabilia.”
