Big Butt Trail to Point Misery: This trail begins at the Walker Knob Overlook at Milepost 358.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway (4.4 miles north of Craggy Gardens and 4 miles south of Mt Mitchell). Park and look for the "Big Butt Trail" post to your left. The 4.5-mile roundtrip hike is strenuous since you are usually going up or down a hill, including some steep sections. Doesn't hiking the Big Butt Trail to Point Misery sound delightful? Well, it is! This high elevation (5,000+ feet), roller coaster hike along the mountain ridges is perfect on a hot summer's day since temperatures run 10-20 degrees cooler than in the city of Asheville.

Two of the more difficult hiking trails start at Walker Knob Overlook. Big Butt Trail and Little Butt Trail. These are more some of the more difficult hikes. The Little Butt hike is known for its gorgeous scenic views of the Black Mountains and Mount Mitchell. The Little Butt Trail is about 5 miles roundtrip, Big Butt Trail is 6 miles roundtrip, and if you continue on to NC-197, that is 12 miles roundtrip This high elevation (5,000+ feet), roller coaster hike along the mountain ridges is perfect on a hot summer's day since temperatures run 10-20 degrees cooler than in the city of Asheville, just 20 miles away.
