The Hellenic Parliament is housed inside the Old Royal Palace in the heart of Athens. The general public can visit the parliament building by joining a free 90 minutes guided tour held at 3pm on Monday or Friday in the summer months of June, July and September. In front of to the building you may be interested in watching the changing of guards at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. It happens routinely every hour daily. The full Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place at 11am on Sunday so be there early. Opposite the Old Palace is Syntagma (= Constitution) Square, an attractive public space/ garden that has a lovely fountain and plenty resting places in the shade of some very tall trees. It is a retreat from the surrounding busy roads. If you travel to the Square by the metro, don't miss the sculptures inside the station.

Every Sunday at 11:00, tourists gather in front of the Parliament building on Syntagma Square (Plateia Syntagmatos) to watch the ceremonial changing of the guard in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The guards (Evzones) wear their traditional white kilts, red and black caps and red clogs with pompoms only that day or on special occasions. On every other day, the Evzones wear regular khaki uniforms with skirts and the changing of the guard takes place every hour on the hour, 24 hours a day. The guards are tall and well-trained soldiers. They belong to the "Proedriki Froura", the guards of the President of Democracy. It is a high honor for every Greek soldier to be chosen as an Evzone.
