Carlton hill is at the east end of Princes street, right in the heart of the city. It’s a very small hill with very big views. Climb up the steps from street level, and you’ll be welcomed with stunning views north across the Forth estuary to Fife, and south over the old town and Arthur’s Seat
Calton Hill, a hill in the center of the city is the location of several iconic monuments and buildings: the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the old Royal High School, the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the City Observatory.
Another great spot in the city centre for a picnic. Good for photographs. Some interesting historical buildings at the top.

“Special evening event at Edinburgh Castle: Castle of Light: Expect wonder, enchantment and a spectacle of colour this festive season as Edinburgh Castle, the defender of the nation, becomes the ‘Castle of Light’. Follow in the footsteps of Scotland’s heroes and be welcomed by stunning visuals and state of the art lighting installations. Watch as the history of this iconic landmark illuminates the very walls that saw it unfold. A magical experience for all of the family - Prepare to be dazzled! First year this has been put on so we can't tell you much more except all the locals are excited about it. You must book online beforehand and wear appropriate clothing for the outdoors as it can be chilly up on Castle Rock! Book here: xzzzz and let us know what you think so we can tell other guests. ”

“A great option if it's raining during your stay and you want to be indoors, the museum is free although there are occasionally exhibitions you can pay to see. It's bigger than you might think and recommend you give yourself a few hours at least to look around!”
