Take the beautiful drive to Hana! It's a full day there and back, but it's a day full of beautiful sights. It's about the journey, not the destination :)

The road to Hana is unforgettable. It is an all day trip, and can be accessed on a tour, or with your own vehicle. I recommend getting a guide book so you know what you are looking for at each stop along the way. The road is windy and narrow, but the scenery is amazing and worth checking out.

This is the #1, must do, in my opinion. There are 3 ways to do this trip, the "Classic" tour, go up through Haiku, driving down to Hana, and then turnaround and drive back. The second is the reverse loop (enter in the town of Kula and head south). The 3rd way by starting in Haiku and then doing a loop back through Kula, but I wouldn't recommend this route, it would leave the "sketchy" part of the drive to the end of the day when it is getting dark, and you will have no benefit of going against the crowds. The reverse loop is my favorite, because you will pretty much avoid the crowds by hitting all the spots at the opposite time of day, plus there is less driving overall. HOWEVER, this way is somewhat dangerous as there are several one way stretches of road that you have to navigate. If you encounter a car, you may end up having to backup a hill in order to let them pass. The rental car companies also will tell you NOT to drive these roads. If you are a confident driver comfortable with mildly sketchy situation, you might want to try the reverse loop. This route does not require a jeep or 4wd under normal conditions. Regardless of the route you select, purchase and download the "Shaka Guide" from your phones app store. This GPS enabled app is awesome for directing you perfectly to all the great spots and giving you history. They have all 3 routes available to purchase, make sure you pick the correct one for your plan. Tips for a great experience.... 1. Leave early in the morning 2. Bring water shoes, towel, sunscreen, water, food/snacks (optional), bug spray (I have never needed it, but it is recommended. CELL PHONE CHARGER IS A MUST - your battery will drain quickly on the GPS tour! 3. Wai'ānapanapa State Park is the only place that requires reservations ahead of time. I would suggest going, but if no reservations are available, don't sweat it, there are plenty of other great things to see. 4. Buy some Banana bread.
